House of Representatives Takes Part in Meeting of IPU Working Group on Science and Technology

<p class="Normal1" style="text-align: justify;">The House of Representatives participated in the meeting organized by the IPU Working Group on Science and Technology on Wednesday, May 8, 2024. Rep. Ilham Essaki represented the House as a member of the Steering Bureau of the High-Level Parliamentary Group on Technology, Innovation, and Digital Transition in the Arab Parliament.</p>
<p class="Normal1" style="text-align: justify;">Held via videoconference, the meeting aims to explore the experience of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in the ethics of science and technology within the scope of promoting the IPU's draft Ethics Code for Science and Technology.</p>
<p class="Normal1" style="text-align: justify;">Following the presentation of the context and reasons behind the meeting, the main items of the draft Ethics Code for Science and Technology, drafted by the Group to be adopted in the 149<sup>th</sup> IPU Assembly in October 2024, were presented. Then, the floor was given to comment and share views to enrich the debate and ameliorate the tenor of the Code.</p>
<p class="Normal1" style="text-align: justify;">The meeting also featured the comments of participants on the draft Ethics Code. In this respect, Rep. Ilham Essaki praised this initiative aimed at communicating and opening to the best practices and experiences in technology and innovation ethics. In the same regard, she stressed the importance of exchanging information and data on the matter.</p>
<p class="Normal1" style="text-align: justify;">On this occasion, Rep. Ilham Essaki gave a brief overview of the main principles of the Ethics and Honor Code that will be adopted by the High-Level Parliamentary Group on Technology, Innovation, and Digital Transition. These principles focus on the use of technology sciences and artificial intelligence.</p>
<p class="Normal1" style="text-align: justify;">In the same vein, she underscored the necessity of respecting the principles and regulations of technology ethics through stressing the importance of protecting privacy, ensuring cybersecurity, protecting data, providing them in the proper manner that respects human rights, and considering the ethical concerns in scientific research on science and technology.</p>
<p class="Normal1" style="text-align: justify;">Rep. Ilham Essaki also called for granting importance to artificial intelligence and its ethics and focusing on its positive usage so that it does not negatively impact the ethics and value systems of the concerned countries and societies.</p>
